SUMMARY

The Mole Agent follows an 83-year-old man posing as a resident in a Chilean nursing home to see if he can find signs of abuse. For this job, there were 2 challengesThe first was to design a piece of merchandise for the documentary film to be distributed at the Sundance 2020 Film Premiere. The second was to design a set of Instagram posts to help promote the film's release on iTunes and streaming services. My solutions were to design buttons with pin closures, and to create posts with uniform branding that continued the film's visual identity and character.

STYLE GUIDE AND REFERENCES

The design system relied on 3 colors based on the original poster design of the film. A motif of a magnifying glass also taken from the cover art was used for both components of the project. Ultimately, I designed 1 pin and 20 Instagrams posts.

BUTTON PIN

I chose a button pin because it was portable, unisex, one size fits all, immediately ready to wear, and applicable for more than just clothing. A challenge was adjusting the colors to be appropriate for print. By sticking to the original typeface and color range, I maintained the appearance and identity of the original film cover. I used only 2 colors and 1 typeface, the design was simple enough to translate on a small surface. I incorporated the magnifying glass to add a layer of interest beyond text and color, as well as to contribute to the film's visual identity that existed from the poster.

INSTAGRAM POSTS

The Instagram posts relied on color and geometric shapes. Like the pin, the goal was to keep it simple and graphic, but to match it to the original look of the film cover.

By using image, type, line, shape, and color I developed 20 different posts that provided further visual assets to the original branding without pulling away from the initial visual identity. I worked to provide engaging graphics for each individual post as well as for the collection of posts when viewed in a grid.

REFLECTION

I really enjoyed working on this project because I was responsible for digital assets as well as physical merchandise. This allowed me to think about 3D space and tactile items, and the ways that they can be distributed quickly to people, worn in more than one way, and be accessible to all genders and materials.
